My GGGF was appointed by the Russians to be village president for a shtetl in
Poland. He supposedly was responsible for collecting taxes and conscripting
for the Army. My questions are:
1. What where these village overseers called?
2. How were they viewed by the rest of the Jewish population?
3. Were they paid to do this job or get any other special privileges?
