It could come >from CARVALHO (pronounced CarbalYO). It has many
dirivitives, including CARBAJAL/CAVAJAL, CARBAJO/CARVAJO,
CARBALLO/CARVALLO. CARVALHO is the Portuguese version of this name, and
is/was a common Sephardic/converso name. The famous Luis Carbajal family
of New Spain (modern day Mexico) were conversos who were burned at the
stake there by the Inquisition in the 1500s. There is a lot of literature
on this family.
