Re: Jews in the Liquor Industry #general

There was a recent discussion in this group about
the role of Jews in the liquor industry in the old
country. Beer and alcohol were indeed very much
Jewish-dominated business in much of Russia.
There is a slim volume called "Heshetiyya KaDat" by Yehudah Leib
Lipkind, published in 1898, discussing many aspects of alcoholic
beverages, including the new laws and licensing regulations issued
by Czarist Russia.
Fascinating title. You might have mentioned that < ha-shetiyyah ka-dat >
is a punning use of a phrase appearing in the book of Esther chapter one,
meaning (roughly) "drinking is in accordance with the law"!
