The custom may have started in Spain and today is not only practiced by
those with Hispanic surnames, but those raised in Spanish speaking
countries. Therefore my Argentine born sister-in-law is Julia Cohen de
Cohen. This American married to an Argentine compromised (note the hyphen
in the signature) . Perhaps the family you are researching originated in
