Jeff Malka asks below about HIAS records.

When I wrote to HIAS asking for information about my g-grandfather who
emigrated in 1904, I received my original request back with a note saying
that their records start in 1906.

Was HIAS existing and active in 1900?

If so,would there be HIAS records available about persons who went through
them either in NYC or in Philadelphia and where could one search through
them?
