Re: "Re: Vladivostock-TALALAYEVSKY" #general

In her message of 02-0809 Beatrice Markel asked for help in finding out
about a "cousin, Lazor TALALAYEVSKY, who lived and worked in Vladivostock
for at least 6 years during the 1930's." She had hoped to find
information about him >from the present head of the Jewish Community but
was disappointed.

Given the anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist policies of the Soviets which
developed during the 1920's I doubt that there was an identifiable Jewish
community in Vladivostock during the 1930's. Still, I imagine that people
of Jewish origin did work there in some governmental capacity or as clerks
or manager of a factory. If they met as Jews, it must have been

The years of cousin Lazor's stint in Vladivostock coincided with "The
Great Terror" during which Japan invaded Manchuria, and isolated it >from
China's power and influence. Stalin hurriedly sent thousands of troops to
the Far East, and economic conditions in Vladivostock deteriorated
greatly. The city's large Asian population was purged and its Korans and
Chinese disappeared or were deported. Whatever private enterprise may have
existed in earlier years in the city was eliminated.

If Ms. Markel's cousin was free to leave to visit his family in Kiev
for ten days, during his six years in Vladivostock it can be assumed that
he had not been banished there for some offense against the Stalinist

There was a University in the city where Lazor could have taught and
done research, but he could also have been employed in a governmental
capacity, or as a clerk or manager with the Trans-Siberian Railroad which
had its terminus in Vladivostock. Perhaps he was a border guard or
perhaps he arranged for the transfer and assignments of the many thousands
of political and criminal prisoners who had been transported to
Vladivostock to be sent transit camps and >from these to labor and die in
the gold fields of Kolyma of Magadan. For all I know, for some suddenly
concocted "counter-revolutionary" offense, Lazor himself could have ended
up in some unmarked mass grave in those same gold fields!

I hope I have not been unduly discouraging and that other Jewishgenners
will have more optimistic view of Ms. Markel's probability in finding
information about her cousin.
