Most Jews did not mutilate themselves to avoid conscription. It was quite
common however, to consume vinegar in large quantities. The result was a
dramatic loss of weight and in some cases an appearance that simulated some
medical disease, such as consumption (T.B.) Jews, and non Jews did not go
around chopping off fingers and toes. This is a myth. More to the truth,
many jewish men and boys served in the Imperial Russian Army, some with
distinction and were highly decorated. In many cases, being in the army
with three square meals a day was a lot better than starving in a small
shtetl. Incidentally, chopping off a small bit of finger did not excuse
anyone >from serving in the army.
