There was a commercial some years ago where a voice-over announcer
interrupted two arguers by saying, "Stop, you're both right." (I'm
old enough to remember the concept but too old to remember the product).
In my e-mail I noted that I have never needed to use an index earlier
than 1917 and If i'm not mistaken, the time frame for the original
inquiry was the 1920's or later. Having said that, I agree that years
prior to 1900 are soundexed.
