American consuls in Palestine #general
Sallyann Sack <sallyann.sack@...>
Those interested in the functioning of the American consuls in Ottoman
Palestine should read Ruth Kark's book "American Consuls in the Holy Land,
1832-1914.'' It is written in English and was published [in 1994] by Wayne
State University in Detroit, Michigan and by Magnes Press in Jerusalem.
At that time, the American consul had several hundred Jewish "proteges"
under its protection. Files with their names and considerable personal
information, such as births, marriages and death, are at the U.S. National
Archives in Washington, D.C. The Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater
Washington has prepared an index of these names which is available on
microfiche >from Avotaynu.
