<< Both families lived at several different locations in this part of upper
Manhattan during the 1920's and early 1930's. The story I heard was
that my grandmother moved whenever her apartment needed to be painted.

Vivian Kahn, Oakland, CA >>

Painting an apartment usually coincided with renewal of the lease in
those days and it seemed that Oct. 1st was the day that *my* family's
lease expired, or needed to be renewed.

So, the 1st of Oct. every year, or three (3 years was a standard lease
term),
we either moved or underwent *the painting* on *my birthday*. I never had
a birthday party. Thanks mom.
