Much thanks to all the kind and helpful Genners. I tried to respond to all
those who have helped, but if I missed you, please consider this a personal
thanks. For the benefit of all those who may need advice, I will post the
outcome of my disaster story. Baruch Hashem my family
file is back in order!
After trying some ideas >from those who responded and tinkering a bit -bingo.
Back to normal! For the benefit of all, let me try to explain what to do.
The bottom line is to make a copy of the corrupted file and delete all the
*bad guys*-those that you can't get to. Get *missing* people >from an old
file,
by marking them in the old file, and create a GEDCOM file of *marked
individuals*. Then import the GEDCOM file into the copy. Delete any
duplicates.
In the end, my index switched numbers of three individuals. Now the index
has 1576 individuals but the numbers go thu 1579. My desire for everything
to be in place has not been salvaged- a small, insignificant price to pay
for the return of my family file! My only question is, my new file
reliable? What can be done to ensure this doesn't happen again?
