<< I have traced family with the names Moritz, Nechame, Rifka, Yirl,
Sima and Naftali.
Moritz became Morris.
==fittingly. Morris is English for Moritz (who was probnably
Mordechai in Hebrew)
Nechame is a mystery - I have been advised it could have been
changed to Nettie?
==Nechama is a Hebrew name. It does not have a common English
equivalent. There's no telling what name she chose in the USA
Rifka became Beckie.
==Rifvka (H) is Rebecca in English, where it is often shortened to
Yirl is a mystery.
==Gender? Nationality? Coud it be a form of Yuri? Yisroel?
Sima - I have been advised it could have been changed to Pearl, Celia
==Sima is variant (among both Sfardim and Ashkenazim) for the feminine
Heb. name Simcha ("Joy"); Among Ashkenazim Simcha (but not Sima) is
also a male name. Celia and Sylvia both start with the "sin" sound but
I see no connection with Pearl.
Naftali - is a mystery.
==No mystery at all. One of the sons of Jacob, father of the tribe
Naftali. Naftali's totem is a deer, which gave the Judeo-German Hirsch,
Herz, the french Cerf, and the Hebrew back formation Zvi. Hirsch/Herz
in America often became Henry. I knew someone in the USA named Nathan
whose Hebrew name was Naftali.
