The Bronx death index shows a Paul Stiller (a resident of the Bronx) who died August 7th 1945. His death certificate number is 30Y. I have been told that the "Y" indicates he died outside of the 5 boroughs. Does this indicate "somewhere in NY State" or could it indicate outside of the State of New York.
My great-grandmother's death certificate was also 30Y as listed on a NYC death index for 10 Aug 1948. I later found out that she had died in the Catskills while there for the summer, was subsequently buried in the family plot in Mt. Judah Cemetery, Queens, NY.
