Re: Zvi by Hebrew name. #general

Re. Mario Stecher's "my hebrew name is Jaim ben Zvi. My real name is Mario
Jorge Stecher... I never think to search by my Hebrew name. Is this
important?" I believe of course Mario's Hebrew name is important but
probably the number of results in look-ups by first name will be very
difficult to manage! (please note Jaim's phonetics in Spanish are equivalent
to Chaim)

There are cases as mentioned yesterday by Maria Torres of unexpected and
confusing inversions. These make the first name the last: " Frustratingly,
Isidor was occasionally in the habit of using "Isidor" as a surname and
Philip as a given one. Even more occasionally, he uses Israel for a first
name, and the Hebrew inscription of the tombstone calls him Ytzack." This
same "accidents" could happen with Zvi.

Perhaps Mario should also refer to Warren BlattĀ“s infofile with his great
presentation on Given Names. He will be able to learn about the relations
for Hebrew Name: Naftali, Biblical Symbol: deer, Hebrew kinnui: Tzvi, and
Yiddish calque: Hersh. Warren's presentation is found at
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/GivenNames/index.html

So if Zvi goes in the family, Naftali, Hersh and variants
(Naftali/Naphtali, Hirsh/Hersh; Tzvi/Tsvi/Zvi ...) are names that
should require Mario's attention when going over possible sources of
different nature.

Hope this helps!
