Re: Kamenets-Podolsk to Argentina 1903 #general

Harvey Kaplan asked if someone travelling >from Rotterdam to Argentina in
1906 would have gone directly, or through the US. There certainly were
direct arrivals to Argentina (maybe after stops along the route - some
European ports plus several Brasilian ports or Montevideo in Uruguay). I
thought a couple of paragraphs I recently posted to the LatAm SIG on
arrivals to Argentina might help...

I mentioned that records for 1870-1881 are unaccounted for and that "Up to
1882, an estimated 30 to 40% of immigrants arrived through uncontrolled
river crossing, and no records ever existed. At any rate, massive Jewish
immigration began several years later... the mark being set by the arrival
of the Wesser during August 1889. [Jewish] Immigration in 1888 was estimated
in 50 persons. The Alliance Israelite Universelle helped members of 8
families reach Argentina. The estimation for 1889 is of 1000, including
hundreds on board the Wesser."

"The Wesser sailed >from Bremen. As Rob said, other ships arrived sailing
from Hamburg. But more ports were used over the decades leaving Europe for
South America. Rotterdam, Marseilles, Genoa, Trieste, Odessa to Turkey...,
Southampton, Liverpool, Cherbourg, Lisbon, Antwerp, the list goes on."

As for the indirect routes.... I contacted a researcher whose father was
marvelled with the looks of a couple who had made it to Galveston and were
visiting the old country later. They looked so rich, fine and elegant that
he decided that if he ever emigrated he wanted to go to Galveston.

When he was 15 or 16 he left on his own and reached the port (Hamburg? I do
not remember now) with his ticket fare. He asked and saw the ticket to
Buenos Aires was cheaper. So he said: "Give me a ticket to Buenos Aires".

He decided the savings would be more than enough to buy a bycicle, and pedal
to Galveston! At any rate, he later did very well.

Hope this helps!
