A slight correction to Dr. Katalin Got's comment, "...the religion had to
be declared in every document in Europe." In the 1920s and 1930s, none of
my Belgian vital records showed religious affiliation, including birth
certificate, identity card, and passport.
Of course, many if not most Jews had a mezuzah affixed to their front door.
