Yoav Epelman was told one great grandfather was born in "Katerine Slavke
gubernia in Russia" and asked "Someone knows where is this place? ".
Perhaps "Katerine Slavke gubernia" is former "Ekaterinoslavka Gubernia" in
present Ukraine. Yoav's signature mentions relatives in the Poltava area
north of Ekaterinoslav but I don't know if they correspond to this great
The Gubernia of Ekaterinoslav or Katerynoslav, was South of Poltava and
Kharkov, North of Taurida, Crimea and the sea of Azov, East of Kherson.
Present name for the area is Dnipropetrovska oblast.
The regional center Dnipropetrovs'k (Dnepropetrovsk, Dnipropetrovsk,
Dnepropetrowsk, Dnipropetrowsk, Dniepropietrowsk), was formerly
Katerynoslav (Yekaterinoslav, Ekaterinoslav). Founded in 1789, it was
named to honour Ekaterina or Kateryna - Catherine the Great. After the
revolution, it became Dnepropetrovsk - set on the river Dnieper and named
after Petrovski - a revolutionary and former Duma member.
