Re: Terms of Endearment and the Yenta #general

In Norwegian - which is a language with much Germanic influence - jente
(pronounced YEN-ta) simply means girl.
En pen lille jente - a pretty little girl; en flink jente - a clever girl;
So-and-so har faat en jente - she has given birth to a girl.

While we are on this thread - what would one say about being called Yenta
The word Yenta is also somewhat perjorative, at least in USAyiddish ("she's
such a yenta"), where it's a sort of gossiping busybody. Actually, it's a
Romance first name, Gentile, that made its way about a thousand years ago, up
the Rhine and through Germany to the East.
