I've been curious as to land travel in Europe in the days before autos (say
before 1910). After reading several web sites, I conclude that a rider with
a healthy animal could travel an average of 25-30 miles per day alternating
the walk and trot. A peddler with horse and wagon considerably less.

Alternate train transportation was likely available by the mid 1800s.
