On June 25,04 Stew Driller (firstname.lastname@example.org) asked for information about
Castle Garden and received several helpful replies.
I want to suggest that he also try to find a copy of "Voices >from the
Yiddish" edited by Irving Howe and Eliezer Greenberg. In this volume there is an
essay entitled "First Days in America" by Israel Kopeloff of Brobruisk, who was a
friend of the Yiddishist and erstwhile social radical Chaim Zhitlowsky.
Kopeleloff desribes in some detail the filth and lice in the Castle Garden
building, which reminded him of the arsenal of Brobrisk'castle and recounts his
adventures trying to find work in order to get away >from it and establish himself
in the "Golden Nation."
