Ida & Joseph Schwarcz
When I was planning to make aliya in 1995, I started selling my books. One
purchaser of paperbacks was in a small town in northern Kentucky. After we
had completed our transactions, the young man behind the counter said that
he noticed that many of my books were of Jewish interest. He leaned over and
whispered, "I'm Jewish, too." His surname was Nelson. Of course, I
immediately asked about his name and where his family originated. He told me
that the name had originally been Katznelson but his grandfather dropped the
Katz. I told him that there was a famous Zionist named Berl Katzenelson. He
exclaimed, "That's my name, Berl!"
He promised to ask his uncles for more family information and get back to
me. He never did.
