New Source of Data - NYC Synagogues with Ties to Belarus #belarus

David M. Fox <davefox73@...>

In reviewing some of my old email, I found a message >from Jerry Seligsohn
about a new source of data that might help SIG members with their family
research.

In 1939 the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration
conducted a survey of all known houses of worship in the United States, both
Jewish and non-Jewish. The synagogue listings for New York City are on five
rolls of microfilm at the New York City Municipal Archives. They are
Microfilm #'s (M.N.) 21318-21322, Roll #'s 319-323.

Ada Greenblatt of the JGS (NY) has written an excellent description of this
resource which can be read at <http://home.att.net/~JGSNYCem/WPAForm.htm>.

If you go to <http://home.att.net/~JGSNYCem/synagogues.htm.> you will see an
index of the contents of the microfilms, which includes the names of the
synagogues. Many of the names of the synagogues show a connection to shtetls
in Belarus.

Someone in the NYC area may want to look at these films the next time they
visit the the NYC Maunicipal Archives. If someone does this, please report
back to this discussion group if you find anything of interest.
