Those dates are actually dates of birth. Also, some former addresses are
often listed for each individual -- you won't get this >from a standard phone
directory.

I see now that they are dates of birth. The reason I had jumped to the
conclusion that they were dates of presence of the person at that address is
that the surname I entered as an experiment showed people I know very well,
with multiple listings, each one with a different (birth)date. I know for a
fact that these people were born only once. My conclusion is that the
birthdates listed are not reliable. Date of birth, in any case, is not a
secret; one fills it out on forms without thinking about it, even in
situations without any pretense of security.

Identity theft is indeed a problem; everyone knows that. But this kind of
thing is not the tool for the theft.

A similar online database is available through a popular commercial
genealogy company. It has an added feature -- it often shows the names and
ages of others who live at the same address. It's a separate and not
inexpensive subscription, but I choose to subscribe because I have found
this type of database to be highly effective for locating and contacting
living distant cousins who I've been unable to locate by any other means.

Well, there you are. This site is not the only one; the fact that there is
such a site, and certainly the fact that there are many, with access either
cheap or altogether free, shows that these details are easy to come by --
the builders of the sites did it, anyone else can too.
