Dear All,

I have written to Michael Bernet privately, but he mentioned that you all might
like to know my experience regarding the use of prescribed names in France, so I
am posting this here. His memory is quite correct!

When I was living in Paris, in the early 1960's, it was absolutely the case that
new parents were required to choose a name for their new infants >from a prescribed
list. They thought my infant son's name was amazing - Barney! That is all
changed now, and many of my young cousins have children with such names as: Jade,
Sasha, Lilou, Ginger, etc. etc. But such was not the case in the '60's, and
earlier. I do not know when this requirement was changed.
