By and large, our ancestors didn't have any confusion: they knew what
they were, namely Jewish. The confusion arose when people,
in particular North American census-takers or various bureaucrats,
would not accept "Jewish" as a nationality, and insisted on a
geographical designation.

And I don't think it's the case that the non-Jews were immune to
this type of confusion, either.
