Dear Genners,

An uncle came to the USA >from Timkowitz, Minsk Gub. in 1922. On the

He was 18 years old at the time.

Can anyone tell me what a cabman was at that time?
1. Horsecart driver (wagoneer).

This occupation was generally known in Yiddish as balagula (>from Hebrew:
baal agula) - the master of the wheels. Term was used primary for the
horsedrivers engaged in the goods transportation.

2. Coachman - a horse "taxicab" driver - people transportation

BTW. Village modern name is Timkovichi, Belarus
