My guess is that it can be Jaffa called Yafa in Arabic, the langue mainly
spoken in Jaffa in the 19th century till the foundation of Israel.
I can explain:
1. the handwritten S in "Sofa" is very close to "J" that, in many European
languages like German and Polish (and others) is pronounced Y.

2. The O of Sofa or Jofa can be based on the Yiddish pronunciation of the
Hebrew kamatz for A.
