Great Grandmother with surname IRONS #general

Christine Hall <eagle@...>

Can anyone help me with the surname of IRONS.

This is the name of my great grandmother on my mothers side and I was told
she was Jewish.

Her full name was Louie Adelene IRONS born 1870 and died around 1951/52.
She married William James SMITH on 26th September 1891 they had 7 children
William Henry Smith, Fred Smith, James Smith, Elsie SMITH (my grandmother)
born 1897 who married Francis James CORNISH and moved to Glen Innes, NSW,
Australia) she died in 1970), Dora Smith, Margery Smith and Ivy Smith.

My Mother's cousin tells me that they lived in Worthing, Sussex, UK and
would have died there (they both lived till they were 80 and died in the
same year).

Can anyone tell me if IRONS is a jewish name or a derivative of something
else? We have been told that she kept her jewishness secret because of
anit-semitism. Unfortunately both she (my mothers cousin) and the rest of
the family have no other information and do not know where they were buried.
My main aim is to establish if the name IRONS is a jewish name and to find
out if it would be stated so on her death certificate or marriage
