Re: Jewish death notices in the early 20th century #general

There appears to be a mis-understanding about the purpose of
published death notices. In the U.S., this is a legal requirement
as claims on property, inheritance, and debt will need to be resolved.

Local law determines in which newspapers the names of the deceased
must appear.

This response has caught my attention because I was not aware of this
requirement. Do legal entanglements have to exist prior to the death or is
this just a matter of course. I ask because I never publishished nor seen
published announcements of my parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc.
deaths. Am I misunderstanding this?

Thanks.
