Given Name Change: Johanna TUSCHINSKI #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

My wife's grandmother was born in West Prussia, in Dirschau/Tczew (near
Gdansk) in 1881. I don't know her given name at birth. She married a man
also >from West Prussia, & they moved to Berlin, where she was known as
Johanna. I don't know the history of who owned what at what time, but I
suspect that this was not her given name at birth - n the Given Names
Database for Germany, "Johanna" is seen as a "New Name." When I look on the
Polish databases, everyone seems to have a Yiddish or Hebrew name. Are
there any Yiddish or Hebrew names that might "translate" easily into
Johanna? Or could it more likely have been a name she simply liked?

Best, Steve Orlen
