Jewish Genealogical Society - Hamilton & Area Meeting
Wednesday, May 17, 2006
7:30 PM to 10:00 PM
Speaker: Dr. Ralph Bloch - The Mohel Book of Huerben/Krumbach in Bavaria
1800 - 1837
Location: Temple Anshe Sholom
215 Cline Avenue North, Hamilton, ON

Jewish genealogists have access to few primary genealogical sources. Where
they do exist, Mohel Books - or circumcision registries - provide a valuable
window into the fabric of Jewish society in times past.

Unfortunately, few Mohel Books have survived the Holocaust, and even fewer
are publicly available. Obviously, they only list male children.

For the rural community of Huerben in Bavarian Swabia, Germany, the
transcript of a Mohel Book covering the period >from 1800 to 1837 is
available at the Leo Baeck Institute Archives in New York.

Ralph Bloch will describe what he found, while he worked his way through
this document.
