I just found a ship manifest for a relative that says he was born in
Varsovia, Polynesian. Where in the world is that?? His boat sailed >from
Marseille, France to the US.

"Varsovia" is Spanish for Warsaw (Warszawa in Polish). And Poland in Spanish
is "Polonia".

If you can check the handwritten manifest and not the info transcribed >from
it, may be you´ll be able to read "Varsovia, Polonia" and not "Varsovia,
Polynesian".

Also, "Polonaise" is French for Polish. Maybe the word "Polonaise" was used
to indicate nationality, and somehow that became a "Polynesian" in the
manifest.
