editing. I meant to say that Yiddish speakers in Eastern Europe, no longer afraid
that their gentile neighbors would understand them, used the Germanic "Hoys"
for house instead of the Judaeo-German "Bajis"; they said "Veyb" for "wife"
instead of the Judaeo-German "Ische" and Germanic "Ferd" for horse instead of
the Judaeo-German "Suss."

I should hope no one called his Veyb a Ferd.
