"Canada" was the name of a sub-camp at Auschwitz. (see Wikipedia
article on Auschwitz at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz. )

I don't know what "socks" might refer to. Perhaps someone with
knowledge of Polish and Yiddish might be able to help.
