Re: Karlwary, Suwalk, Russia #general
Miriam Margolyes asked in her "Karlwary, Suwalk, Russia" message if any Genner has
"an idea as to the current name & location of Karlwary?... I know Suwalki is in
Poland now, but Karlwary?"
Miriam's "Karlwary" is probably Kalvarija, Kalwarja, Kalvariya, Kalvarijos,
coordinates 54°24' 23°14', presently in Lithuania, 85.7 miles WSW of Vilnius,
according to ShtetlSeeker.
Kalwaria (one of its variant names) is about 6 miles >from the present Lithuania-
Poland border, by the Sheshupe river, on the Suwalki - Marijampole (Mariampol)
road, with Suwalki, Poland, 24 miles SSW, and Marijampole (Lithuania) 12 miles
ShtetlSeeker gives a link to a JewishGen Locality Page for Kalvarija,
which includes alternate names: Kalvarija [Lith], Kalvarye [Yid], Kalwaria [Pol],
Kalvariya [Rus], Kalvarien [Ger], Calvaria, Kalvaria, Kalwariya, Kalwarya, and
relevant links for Kalwaria research.
The Locality Page specifies that before WWI (c. 1900) it was part of the Kalwarya
district, Suwalki Province, Russian Empire, and between the wars (c. 1930) in the
Marijampole district, then Lithuania.
There is a ShtetlLinks Site for Kalvarija in
