According to Shmuel Gorr's book "Personal Names" ,p. 52, the names Adel, Eide, or
Eidel are all equivalent to Adinah, a Hebrew name with biblical origins, meaning
"Gentile female." Adel is a Yiddish derivative of the same name. My g-grandmother
was known, on various documents, and by members of the family, as Ada, Ida, Eidya,
and Adel.
