1897 Russian Census #belarus

I recently received a message asking about the
availability of 1897 Russian Census information for a
couple of areas in Belarus. Not having the answer, I
immediately asked Dave Fox if he had any info. He
sent a very informative response (as usual) and I
thought I better share the answer in case anyone else
has a similar question. By sending this information
to the SIG, we'll be able to find it again in our
email archives.

Here's Dave's answer: "The 1897 Grodno gubernia All
Russia Census project has been completed and is in
the All Belarus Database. It is only for the very
fragmented documents that remained in the Grodno
Archive. It includes some towns that were in Grodno
gubernia which are no in eastern Poland and the
project was partially funded by the Bialystok SIG. To
the best of my knowledge, the 1897 Census for Minsk,
Vitebsk, and Mogilev gubernia’s did not survive,
although statistical data (not of any real value to
genealogists) did survive. If someone knows that
census data (actual names, etc) for these other
gubernias do exist, I would certainly like to get some
details. By the way, the 1897 All Russia Census for
Vilna gubernia, and parts of Latvia have been found
and the data is on JewishGen."

If you are interested in the census and what records
are available on the JewishGen Belarus SIG site and
the larger JewishGen site, see
