Re: Marriage out of NYC #general

The misspellings might be in the index or they might be in the actual
certificate. I have noticed numerous NYC marriage certificates with
variations of surname spellings on the front of the certificate, yet
with the more accepted rendering (within the family, as best as I can
tell) in the signatures of the bride and/or groom on the reverse of
the document. A 1898 document for my great-grandfather's sister had
the name BERRENT but signed BARNETT for the bride and the name LURIA
(LOORY) for the groom.

I am convinced that the reason so many vital statistic records and
Ellis Island records appear to be missing are the misspellings
indicated in the indexing.
