given name Tzala #general

Herbert Lazerow

Toward the end of Exodus, Betsalel is one of the artists selected to
oversee the construction of the mishkan. In eastern Europe, Betsalel
often is abbreviated to Tsalel. I have never seen Tzala, but Beider
in his Dictionary of Ashkenazi Given Names lists Tsale as a variant
dating back as far as the 16th century in the northern part of the
Pale of Settlement. The differences between tz and ts, and between e
and a are probably not significant here. People with this name often
took the given name Charles when they came to the English-speaking
world because of the similarity of sound.
