Searching: BERKOWITZ, Hungary (Slovakia) -> Wilkes Barre, PA #general

Mark Strauss

My great-grandfather Moritz BERKOWITZ emigrated >from Zemplen County in
Hungary (now Slovakia) in 1882 amd settled in Wilkes-Barre, PA. His
parents were Samuel (Shmeul) and Rose Berkowitz, and they also
immigrated to Wilkes-Barre and were buried in the old Jewish cemetery
in nearby Scranton. After doing a census search in Zemplen County, I
discovered a Moricz Berkovics who was born in 1852 in the town of
Mag-Krucso, Varanno, Zemplen in the 1869 Census. This Moricz's parents
were Mano Berkovicx and Roza Berkovics. I suspect that Moricz is my
great-grandfather. My question is could Mano be a nickname for Samuel
(Schmeul)? Also, does anyone know anything about the town of
Mag-Krucso? How can I find more information, and I am also seeking
other Berkowitz's who may have connections to Wilkes-Barre and Zempein
County in Hungary.
Thank you.
