My paternal grandfather was born with the surname KASSEMOFF in Rezekne, Latvia,
and I have archival documents saying they had lived also in Novo-Alexdrandrovsk,
Lithuania.
Recently I spoke to a man (here in Israel), whose surname is KASSEMOFF.
As my KASSEMOFF line are Levis I wanted to find out if the man was also a
Levi and therefore a possible relative.
He told me that his name wasnt originally KASSEMOFF but that his ancestor
had bought the name over 100 years ago to avoid conscription.
I am familiar with families who have changed the 2nd son's surname to another
surname to avoid conscription, but I wondered if anyone had heard about
"buying" a name.
