I am delighted to announce that the Jewish Records Indexing-Poland Project
for the town of Kowal is now fully funded and the index to records can now
be searched online at www.jri-poland.org Thanks to the generosity of a group
of Kowal researchers, an index to the 1800 records in the Polish State
Archives covering the years 1879-1894 for births, 1885-1901 for marriages
and 1883-1893 for deaths is now available for other researchers to make
progress with their research.
In Kowal, being located in the Warszawa Gubernia between Lodz and Wloclawek,
brides and grooms often came >from other towns in the district and with a
population of over 1,000 residents between the Wars, it is worthwhile
checking out this resource. Some of these nearby towns include Plock,
Sierpc, Lipno, Gostynin, Izbica Kujawska and, of course, Wloclawek.
Before searching, it is a good idea to scan the list of surnames on the
JRI-Poland "YOUR YOWN" page for Kowal and note any variations of spellings
for the family name. Enter each on the "SEARCH DATABASE" page, so that all
possibilities have been covered.
The LDS film for the years 1810-1819 is being indexed and hopefully will be
online early next year. There are other resources available for Kowal
although access currently requires on-site research. For example, in the
Wloclawek Archives, Books of Residents exist for the years 1886 to 1930 and
in the Centrum Judaicum in Berlin, there are records for marriages for the
years 1837-1844, 1861-1862, 1900-1907 and 1939.
For researchers with an interest in Kowal, please note that I keep a record
of all enquiries and the family surnames being researched and welcome
contact with anyone with this interest.
