A Google search for "Lottery history Europe" yields this:
The first recorded lottery in Europe was a raffle held by the Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck in 1446. He gave away his paintings as prizes. The Virginia Colony was founded with money raised by a 1612 lottery in England.
Elsewhere- in the Book of Numbers of the Old Testament it is written that Moses was awarded land near the River Jordan after playing a local lottery.

I would be very interested in any replies to this question, as family legend has it that my gg grandfather won the lottery in Grajewo, Poland some time in the late 19th or early 20th century. Has anyone done any research on when the lottery may have started in Europe?
