Re: Cemetery plots from defunct landsmanschaften #general
Stephan Owen Parnes
Jim Gutterman is correct ("in NY defunct societies were "overseen" by NYS
insurance dept liquidation bureau...").
The NY Times ran an article about this aspect of the work of the New York
Liquidation Bureau (NYLB; http://www.nylb.org/) on August 2, 2009:
Since the B'ne Rezitza Association, Inc., was incorporated in New York
State, the property in New Jersey may very well be administered in New York
State--whether by the NYLB or by some other entity that may have been
arranged when the association began to close out it's affairs. Since the
association's papers are at YIVO, there may be a hint about plans for the
cemetery property in the documents >from the final year.
On September 10, 2009, shortly after the article referenced above appeared
in the New York Times, the New Jersey Cemetery Board
(http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/cemetery/) held a public meeting. The
minutes of that meeting
(http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/cemetery/minutes/cemmin_091009.htm) refer to
the article in Section VII (For Your Information) and indicate that the
problem described in New York is also a serious problem in New Jersey.
