SANDLER - how did this surname come to be? #general

Andrea Dechter

My grandfather's name was Chaim (Hyman) SANDLER. Although I never met
him, he was always referred to by this name and the Ellis Island
manifest and NY census reports (1920, 1920) that I've found do support
this name as well. Additionally, my mother's maiden name was Sandler.

I recently ordered a microfilm >from the LDS Family History Center and
just tonight was lucky enough to have found his death certificate.
However, I'm now thoroughly confused...the certificate shows that
Hyman's father's name was Moshe Wolf and his mother's name was Gishe
Davidovitch, both >from Russia (Hyman's last known residence prior to
coming to the USA was Zhitomir, Russia).

If anyone has any ideas on how my grandfather's surname Sandler came to
be, I'd appreciate hearing >from you.

Many thanks for your help,
