I went down in person to the office of the NYC Clerk, and
convinced them to conduct a search by the bride's maiden name, although I
provided the first name of the groom.

Marriage records 50 + years are public records, and you do not need to show
proof that you are a relative. The only issue is that after 1952, the
Marriage Indexes are not for public viewing.
