I was with a group of friends last night and the subject
of Yizkor books came up. I told them about the lists of those slain
in the Holocaust published in each shtetl's book. One friend asked
how these lists were compiled -- who kept track of the names, the
families, so many thousands -- who was there to remember and record?
My guess is that it happened differently in every shtetl -- and
perhaps that the compilers of the various lists relied on records at
Yad Vashem -- but to be honest I really don't know. If anyone can
shed light on this, I'd love to hear >from you.
Thanks. David Laskin,
