(USA) Georgia State Archives Are Threatened With Closure Due to Budget Cuts #general
Jan Meisels Allen
It has been announced on the APG listserve which is open only to members
that the Georgia State Archives are being threatened with closure to the public due to statewide budget cuts. Over the past several years the Archives have had their days of being open to the public reduced >from five to two days and dramatic staff reductions. Evidently, in the current 2012 Georgia General Assembly session legislators are being required to cut 2% from the state budget and one of the cuts will be to the Georgia Departmentof Archives and History-forcing them to close 100% to the public. Their decision could be as soon as late January or February. The closings affect genealogists, historians, lawyers and others. The Friends of the Georgia State Archives have a website with further information http://www.fogah.org/id25.html Jan Meisels Allen IAJGS Vice President Chairperson, IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee |
