Jackie Wasserstein

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island invites you to join us at our
Sunday, February 26, 2012 meeting.

Topic: "The Legacy of Primo Levi".
Primo Levi was among the greatest witnesses to the atrocities of the
Holocaust. Mussolini's government enacted a series of anti-Semitic regulations
in 1938. In spite of this Primo Levi completed a degree in chemistry at
the University of Turin. When the Nazis invaded Italy, Levi joined a band of
Partisans. He was captured by the Fascist militia and was put on a cattle
car headed to Auschwitz. Out of the 650 Italian Jews in his "shipment,"
Levi was one of the 20 who left the camps alive.
He was the author of 2 novels and is best known for "If This is a Man", his
account of the year he spent at Auschwitz as a prisoner.

Guest Speaker: Stan Pugliese, Professor of Modern European History at
Hofstra University. Professor Puliese is a specialist on Italian anti-fascist
Resistance and Italian Jews.

Time: 2:00 PM
