My maternal grandfather was always known to me as Samuel Cohen and I was under the
impression that before he left Russia around 1906 his name had been Shmuel. On the
1910 census he is listed as Solomon. And in a letter written (in Yiddish) by
another relative in the 1940s he is referred to as Shalom. Are the names Shmuel
-- Solomon -- and Shalom more or less interchangeable? Is it possible that his
name was originally Shalom and he anglicized alternately as Solomon and Sam/Samuel?
